The painting is a significant example of the early Impressionism of Henri Lebasque. In a description of a painting in the Museum Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, Madame Denise Bazetoux (the author of the Cat. rais.) states that his stay in Lannion represents an initial step in the artist's development, since the painter's palette has brightened considerably. (Catalog entry for Inv. No. CTB.1996.43.)
Because of its themes and the unique joy in his colors and shapes Lebasque was admired.
After his studies he joined the studio of Bonnat. He also maintains an intensive exchange with young painters such as Vuillard and Bonnard, the founders of the artists' association "Nabi" and "Intimists."
In 1903 he founded, together with Matisse and other artists the Salon d'Automne.
The first retrospective exhibition of his work is presented only twenty years after his death at the Musée des Ponchettes in Nice.
